Eric Posner Says College Students Are Ignorant Children

In the “smart enough that he should know better” category is Eric Posner. Who is Eric Posner? Well, he is a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, and an apparently confused fellow who thinks that Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme and that the NSA spying on Americans is just fine. And he also thinks that “Students who enter college know hardly anything at all,” and that problems universities face, from people being offended to rape, all stem from the problem “that universities have been treating children like adults.” Yes, I am about to disagree with Eric Posner and explain why he is wrong. Proceed at your own risk. Continue reading

In Which I Answer Some Questions About Submissiveness

Posted in D/s, Questions Answered, submission with tags , , , , on January 23, 2015 by Xajow

Take your seats, students. Class is in session. Recently I received some questions from an impatient commenter who wishes to remain anonymous: What does it mean if you’re submissive with a certain kind of person and not with others? And does that mean you are not submissive? What’s an ideal submissive? Is it a 24/7 submissive like a Dom would be? And what does it mean if you genuinely are the complete opposite with others and this can’t mean you only enjoy role playing a submissive if you genuinely are with the people who can bring that side out or make you want to let them take control? Is a good submissive always submissive? So let us try to unpack some of this and provide some answers. Continue reading

“All Is Forgiven”

This post is simple. Just the cover of the latest Charlie Hebdo. If you think you will be offended by it, don’t look. If your gut is made of sterner stuff, have a look see. Continue reading

Free Speech Is Good, Blaming the Victim Is Not

I continue to be dismayed by the attempts of some people to blame the Charlie Hebdo staff for the terrorist attack that killed several members of the staff and a number of other people besides. If you go over to reason.com, you can check out Anthony Fisher’s article highlighting some of these comments. Most of them seem to be along the lines of, “Well, the murders should not have happened, but they wouldn’t have if those awful people at Charlie Hebdo had not been so mean and hateful.” It makes me wonder if these people are really thinking about the things they are saying. Yes, Free Speech Means Offensive Speech Too

Posted in Argumentation, First Amendment, In the News, Libertarianism, Philosophy, Politics with tags , , , , on January 8, 2015 by Xajow

Some people seem to believe that if someone finds the expression of another offensive, that expression should not and cannot be considered free speech. Which is an emotional argument, not a rational one. By which I mean, it is an intellectually shallow, illogical and immature argument. It is an argument that cannot be defended by reason. If you doubt me on this, try to find such an argument that is supported by reason and not by emotional language. I am quite certain you cannot. Continue reading

Free Speech Is More Important Than the Feelings of Terrorists

Posted in First Amendment, In the News, Philosophy, Politics with tags , , , on January 7, 2015 by Xajow

If you have not paid attention to the news today, a French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, was attacked by Muslim terrorists and twelve people were killed. The attack was carried out by cowards who could not bear to see Islam’s prophet Mohammed mocked in cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo. Some people have suggested that the staff of Charlie Hebdo should have been less irresponsible. Which makes me angry. So yes, I am going to rant about it. Continue reading

What I Am Learning About Myself, part the second

Remembrary, remembrary, the fifth of January… No, that does not really work. Ah, well, you can’t expect a golden turn of phrase all the time. What? What do you mean I should still try harder? It is all well and good for you to expect me to write well but I have to come up with the… Oh fine. You’re right. I should try harder. Hm. Now is the winter of my discontent made glorious summer by my own something something something. Hrm. Yeah, that could have gone better. Anyway, I need to get on with this post. So if you are not too put off by the opening, let’s move on. Continue reading
